Creating a Learning Culture

We have established the case for the Rise of the Autodidacts (the meaning of autodidact is essentially a self learner).  However, an organization can create sustainable competitive advantage in a knowledge economy by creating a learning culture and raising an army of autodidacts. I strongly believe that this is one of the fundamental levers of driving and managing change in an organization. So let us examine some ways in which we can go about creating a learning culture in an organization.

Where do we start creating a learning culture?

It is incumbent upon a leader of the knowledge workforce to appreciate and recognize the tectonic changes happening all around us. One-time or re-active responses will clearly not suffice and a cultural change is required. Organizations need to embrace and internalize a Learning Culture.

There is no cookbook for creating a learning culture and the solution themes are too varied and complex. However, as teams are able to see the woods instead of the trees, the patterns begin to emerge and the stage is set for the snowball effect of a Learning Organization. If you plan to dive straight in and lead by example, you couldn’t have made a better start.

How can we make the change?

There are myriad ways of transitioning to a sustainable Learning Culture. Let us cull out a few “action words” from some known practices

  • Institutionalize:

Does you orgInstitutionalize - Learning Cultureanization have a well-defined learning program? What is the importance that the top management assigns to this program – through words and through its actions? We have witnessed the massive impact of formalizing our learning efforts into a comprehensive learning program that has been lapped up across all levels.

  • Democratize:

Democratize - Learning CultureWith institutions, come bureaucracy and hence the need to democratize. The volatility of the external environment needs an agile response. This can be achieved by democratizing the process of learning. The osmotic flows of knowledge and information are often more effective than top-down ivory tower based approaches.

  • Align:

Align - Learning CultureIs the learning program a standalone or ad-hoc initiative? Or, is there alignment between the performance management systems and the learning program? Is performance measured by more efficient replication of the past or is it measured on the scale of future relevance? Is the “Talent Management” thinking aligned with the performance management process?

  • Diversify:

Diversify - Learning CultureThe concept of “Connect the Dots” evokes memories of Steve Jobs applying his calligraphic skills to create beautiful fonts for computers. Much of the hype around disruptive innovation today is not stemming from a classical invention but rather from applying the knowledge of one field to another. The by-product of a conscious approach towards cross-fertilization of knowledge can be surprising. Throw a bunch of people with diverse skills into a team and you will be surprised once; get people to acquire diverse skills and they will surprise you for a lifetime!

  • Digitize:

Digitize - Learning CultureAre you taking advantage of e-learning platforms? Are team members riding the MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) revolution? If Ivy Leagues are lending their expertise and knowledge with your teams at your convenience, what is stopping you?

  • Gamify:

Gamify - Learning CultureLearning systems are increasingly relying upon gamification techniques and making the journey a lot of fun. Although, there will be few intrinsically motivated learners, the concepts of gamification can alter the learning experience.

  • Communicate:

Communicate - Learning CultureThe burden of daily chores can potentially wear down the most passionate learners. There are three things you can do as a leader – Communicate, Communicate, Communicate and if you want a different set of C’s you can communicate using curated content consistently.

What lies ahead?

Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future!

However, one can surmise that survival in the VUCA world will require not just sharpening the saw, but acquiring different tools. Making this change as dictated by circumstances may result in survival. However, the autodidacts will tread on a path of continuous and self-directed learning. The world will see the rise and rise of the autodidacts and the hegemony of learning organizations.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but then we are humans and do not have the luxury of nine lives!

Rise of the Autodidacts

We live in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) times where change is the only constant. Having worked in five service industries across two decades, I can see the tsunami of these disruptive forces at play.

Consequently, many of the skills and intellectual assets that were most valued yesterday can all but become obsolete today.

There are three fundamental factors that have given rise to the creation of a fundamentally different world. The combination of information explosion, meteoric rise of computational resources and machines coming to life can only just begin to describe the outlines of our environment. However, let’s scratch the surface and see what is really going on.

  1. Information Explosion – We have created more information in the last few years than has been created since the recorded history of mankind. This pace is only going to accelerate in the near future. One of the by-products is the reduction of the average human attention span to less than that of a goldfish!
  2. Computational Resources – The availability of enormous computational resources has severe repercussions. The tasks which the economy and society  relied upon humans to perform are being performed far more efficiently by a variety of computational resources.
  3. Intelligent Machines – Even knowledge work is being machine learned through artificial intelligence and deep learning. With IoT (Internet of Things) becoming the focus of the mainstream, intelligent machines will acquire “thinking” capabilities and pose unique challenges.

Under these circumstances, is it possible for the average person to go back to the traditional educational system to upgrade their educational and intellectual armory to survive the VUCA world. Is it possible to continue to be ahead of the curve or keep pace with the changing demands of the time with the skills, knowledge and expertise of yesterday?

Obviously not !

This is the time for the Rise of the Autodidacts !

This is the time for people to start and keep learning on their own, without recourse to conventional wisdom of formal learning and create an “autodidactual” world. The world will witness the Rise of the Autodidacts, who will thrive in this VUCA world.

What Is Autodidactual

First things first, “Autodidactual” is not a word from the English dictionary.

It is derived from the dictionary word “autodidact” and you can read this post to understand the meaning of autodidact.

As you can gather, autodidactual is the way of life of an autodidact. It represents the entire ecosystem of a person who treads on the path of continuous self-learning without recourse to the formal education system. This endeavour is continuous and multi-dimensional.

Since change can (and will) happen across various dimensions and walks of life, an autodidactual system will help equip  you with the required armory to not only survive but thrive in this VUCA world that is volatile uncertain complex and ambiguous.

We hope to help you in your autodidactual journey; but as you would know, the epicentre of an autodidact’s learning is internal rather than external.

In fact, if you look around at any child in today’s times, you cannot fail to notice the abundance of natural curiosity, inquisitiveness and learning powers that we are endowed with. I would argue that we were no different in our childhood and the curse of the educational system has caused systemic unlearning of our natural learning abilities.

In that backdrop, we were all natural autodidacts and only need to find our lost autodidactual world. It is certainly there, somewhere within us. Finding this lost world will lead us to untold treasures, the least of which will be the ability to not just survive but thrive in this VUCA world!

Over to you and to your autodidactual system to leverage this platform and also help others in discovery and development of their autodidactual ecosystem.
